CBPS Oxfordshire October 2025 – Donkeys and Horses

Claire and Paul will be teaching a unique Chinese Brush Painting workshop on Donkeys and Horses for CBPS Oxfordshire at Stanton Harcourt (map) on Sunday 12th October 2025. This is in preparation for 2026, the Year of the Horse. Throughout the day we will be tackling principles and abstractions of donkeys and horses. We can promise lots of fun leading to students coming away with being able to create their own composition. There will be lots of tips about how to approach the subjects, particularly with regard to brush handling, strokes and textures.

CBPS Oxfordshire October 2024 – Angry Birds & Fish

Claire taught a fabulous Chinese Brush Painting workshop on Angry Birds and Fish for CBPS Oxfordshire at Stanton Harcourt (map) on Sunday 13th October 2024. In the morning, Claire tackled some very Angry Birds, a subject she has recently reclaimed in a very particular way! There was lots of fun and some excellent compositions by students. In the afternoon, Claire taught Angry Fish. There were lots of tips about how to approach the subject, particularly with regard to brush handling, strokes and textures, along with consideration of composition for students’ to complete their own compositions on the day and afterward.

CBPS Hampshire September 2024 – Angry Fish & Scholar’s Rocks

Paul & Claire taught a Chinese Brush Painting workshop on Angry Fish and Scholar’s Rocks for CBPS Hampshire on Saturday 7th September 2024, just outside Winchester (map). In the morning, Claire tackled Angry Fish, a subject she has recently reclaimed in a very specific way! There was lots of fun and fantastic compositions by students. In the afternoon, Paul taught Scholar’s Rocks. There were lots of tips about how to approach the subject, particularly with regard to brush handling, strokes and textures, along with consideration of composition for students’ to complete their own compositions on the day and afterward.

CBPS Oxfordshire July 2024 – Scholar’s Rocks

Paul taught a Chinese Brush Painting workshop on Scholar’s Rocks for CBPS Oxfordshire at Stanton Harcourt (map). This was Sunday 14th July 2024. There were lots of top tips about how to approach the subject including some historical context, along with plenty of philosophical meaning and enough time for students’ to complete their own compositions throughout the day.

CBPS Yorkshire Sept 2023 – Dragons & Happy Buddhas

Paul & Claire taught Chinese Brush Painting workshops on Chinese Dragons and Happy Buddhas for CBPS Yorkshire at Pool in Wharfedale (map). This was over the weekend of Saturday 2nd & Sunday 3rd September 2023. There were lots of top tips about how to approach both subjects and enough time to complete students’ own compositions throughout the weekend.

On Saturday, Paul taught how to paint a Song Dynasty dragon step-by-step. Below is a picture of what I wanted us to achieve by the end of the day. There were lots of other examples of Dragons through time so that if students wanted to look at variations there was choice. Members also brought colours as the attached picture was only a guide. Gold tinted Dragons are definitely a thing – especially for those who are also attended the Happy Buddha workshop on Sunday!!!

On Sunday, Claire introduced students to the uplifting topic of painting Happy Buddhas. She demonstrated how to paint a variety of these jolly characters with their various traditional additions e.g. small children, big bags etc. The final example was of the Happy Buddha at the end of The Journey to the West, sitting on a celestial cloud. It was a light-hearted introduction and exploration of figure painting. We worked as large as students wanted and some brought gold paint to offer highlights…

CBPS Oxfordshire July 2023 – Contemporary Chinese Landscape

Claire taught a Chinese Brush Painting workshop on Contemporary Chinese Landscape for CBPS Oxfordshire at Stanton Harcourt (map). This was Sunday 16th July 2023. There were lots of top tips about how to approach the subject including some historical context, along with plenty of time for students’ to complete their own fantastic compositions throughout the day.

Little Berkhamsted June 2023 – Chinese Brush Painting with Paul

Paul taught a Chinese Brush Painting masterclass as part of the Little Berkhamsted (mapMaster Art Workshops series. Students were introduced to the fascinating art of Chinese Brush Painting through the introduction of Classical Chinese subjects. They were shown lots of top tips concerning the approach of particular subjects and were able to complete their own compositions throughout the day.

Saturday 17th June 2023 10am – 4pm Price £80 included a 2 course lunch and all day refreshments.
